Had an experience the other night, an experience that I have had many times before. Had a patron ask us to play a certain song to the end the night. Was I familiar with the song? Of course…when it comes to bad songs, I am the king.
But did I, or for that matter the band collectively “know” how to play the song? No, we did not.
Evidently, after a minute of argument back and forth, I discovered that I was wrong. Evidently, I DID know the song. Although I had never performed the song, only knew the first line of the lyrics, and the band had no idea what the chord progression or arrangement was, clearly I knew it.
Can you sense the sarcasm in this post? If you ask for a song, and we can even “fake” our way through it, we will most often give it a try. But when I tell someone that we DO NOT know the song, that means that no matter how strongly you wish to fight for this song, we can’t play it. And the argument of “Yes you do. You know it”, tells me that you probably were not the captain of the debate team when you were in school……
Here is a list of other things we aren’t able to do:
- Brain Surgery
- Turn back time
- Turn water into wine
- Fart the Alphabet
- Read Minds
Just be reasonable. We aren’t telling you “NO” just to ruin your night. In fact, we try to do the opposite 99% of the time.
